Public transit offers a reliable, fast and easy alternative to driving and provides enhanced travel options to the pedestrians who rely on transit. It grants access to tens of thousands of riders for daily activities including work, school, shopping, restaurants, and healthcare. It is a positive long-term investment and asset – attracting businesses and making individual counties a higher quality place to live, work, and prosper. Delivering the solutions in various models allows an integrated team approach to optimize the quality, reliability and operability of the System through innovation, flexibility, and service life efficiency, thereby creating a positive and sustainable public perception. This solution lowers capital and operating costs, reduces visual impacts in communities, and is more sustainable. Reducing use of tunnel crossings lowers tunneling costs, reduces community impacts from trucking of the spoils, and reduces potential settlement, therefore improving passenger flow and system safety.

Michael has assisted MDOT/MTA and the area stakeholders to ensure the vision and promise represented by various transit projects is fulfilled. Michael’s work has consisted of dove tailing new sites into existing sites. He has also spear-headed Revit remodeling and 3D construction document development. 


The project involves dove tailing proposed design solutions for metro rail into existing contextual site information. The project also includes mezzanine level construction, center platform and side platform configurations as well as architectural and structural plan development. A regular design session involved developing diagrams to clearly indicate problems and solutions to client quantity, quality, and contextual concerns. Designers facilitated logistics for several platforms, rehabilitation and renovation type metro construction projects involving cost proposal studies for restoration. Modifications to existing facilities, amenities, upgrades to ADA compliance, and historical preservation pedestrian trail expansion accommodate/support expected for end user capacity.
The design team was responsible for providing technical coordination for the DASH facility. Michael helped provide planning, architectural, interior design, and structural engineering services for a new, $35 million, 156,500-square-foot, design-build bus maintenance facility). The facility provides administrative, operations, maintenance, and covered and heated bus storage space for up to 130 buses (with future addition), and features 10 bus maintenance bays with two bus fueling and washing lanes; driver spaces with locker rooms, quiet room, and an exercise facility; and a 99,800-square-foot rooftop parking deck. The design is ADA-compliant and has achieved Gold LEED® Certification.
The West Ox Bus Operations Facility can accommodate operations and maintenance for a combined fleet of up to 300. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and Fairfax Connector buses, include approximately 26 maintenance bays, provide fuel, wash, and body shop facilities. Designers were responsible for solving contextual site issues, planning, architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, structural engineering, and transportation engineering in the design of this facility.
Managed project design team, budget, and client coordination throughout the design and construction phases of the project. Michael assisted with providing architecture and engineering design and public involvement for a new, 481,400-square-foot equipment maintenance and operations center for the county’s Transit, Fleet, and Highway Departments. The project consists of two complexes on adjoining sites; the 339,800-square-foot Transit and Fleet Services complex, which accommodates maintenance and operations facilities for 300 buses, 3,000 heavy vehicles, and 600 employees; and the 141,600-square-foot Highway Services complex, which includes offices, a bunk room, kitchen facilities, a warehouse, salt barns, and parking for round-the-clock emergency operations. The center was designed for a LEED® Silver rating, although LEED® Gold is anticipated to be achieved.
